There is a variety of information that exists in the Mail Transport Logs under System Logs that provide helpful hints to problems related to mail delivery. The System Database in the Reporting section will also provide vital information regarding system health. The System Logs include a search utility where specific criteria are entered and each line entry that matches the criteria will be displayed. The search utility accepts single entries only, while pressing 'REFRESH' will display the required search criteria. Search criteria to specify are:
Delay - This provides the length of time a message stayed in the queue. Normal delay times are 1-30 (seconds), depending on the complexity of the network. Larger delay times can be attributed to network interface settings (full vs. half duplex vs. auto), causing the mail queue to rise. Messages that are deferred will have extremely high delay times. Some of these messages maybe valid, the rest are SPAM related which will eventually clear itself out. Searching Delay will also provide a Status message indicating what happened to the message.
Relay - This indicates the direction mail travels. External domains associated to Relay indicate outbound mail delivery. Internal IP addresses or hostnames indicate inbound mail delivery. Pay particular attention to external domains as it may indicate unauthorized relaying. This situation occurs only if an explicit rule is specified for relaying. Searching Relay will also provide a Status message indicating what happened to the message.
HH:MM:SS - Displays all mail delivered within a specific time. (Hour/Minute/Seconds) Seconds does not need to be specified.
Message-ID - Example: 82698638E0. A combination of alpha numeric characters that form a unique ID to identify a specific message. This information details when that message entered ePrism, where it was from, what actions were taken if any, and when the message exited ePrism. A message-ID may be reused once a message has left the system.
Other - From, To, Sender, Size, Connect, Untrusted, Trusted, Process ID (5 digits)
