What is an MX Record and why is it required?

Applies To: Models 1000, 2000, 3000

MX Records specify the mail server or servers that accept mail addressed to that mail destination. Each MX record requires a preference value that tells mailers sending mail the order in which to contact the destination's mail servers. The lower the preference value, the more preferred the mail server. The value 0 is most preferred, 65535 is least preferred. Multiple MX records with different preference values tell the sending mail server the order in which it should use the destination's mail servers.

Separate load balancing hardware is not required to provide load sharing and redundancy. As load sharing and redundancy capabilities have been built into DNS using MX records, the need for these capabilities are eliminated as features within ePrism.
